Mantón
This
new multimedia work explores the existence of sweatshops and the
exploitation of others in the name of fashion. The Mantónes
de Manila were the beautiful shawls traditionally worn by Spanish
dancers and a fashion accessory popular with European women in
the late 19th century. These silk shawls were embroidered and
sewn by Chinese women.
This
production brings to light this story of beauty and pain through
contemporary Spanish flamenco dance led by Susana di Palma and
an ensemble of extraordinary dancers, the original poetry of Ping
Wang, the artistry of actress/dancer Maria Cheng, and visuals
by Diane Walker.
